2019 Year in Review: Supporting Our Community
Supporting Our Community
2019 was a year that demonstrated Alameda Peeps’ commitment to supporting our community members, whether they were federal employees affected by a government shutdown or families struggling with school lunch debt.
Coast Guard Shutdown Support
When the federal government shutdown affected Coast Guard members and their families in early 2019, Alameda Peeps quickly organized to help. As a Coast Guard City, Alameda has a special connection to the Coast Guard community, and our members stepped up to provide support during this difficult time.
Community members organized donation drives, fundraisers, and other support efforts to help Coast Guard families make ends meet during the shutdown. This effort showed our community’s commitment to supporting those who serve our country.
School Lunch Debt Cash Mob
Building on the success of our 2017 school lunch debt initiative, Alameda Peeps organized another cash mob to help clear school lunch debt for families in the Alameda Unified School District. Once again, community members came together to ensure that no child would go hungry at school due to financial hardship.
This continued commitment to supporting families and children in Alameda demonstrated that our community values education and the well-being of all our neighbors.
Looking Forward
As 2019 came to a close, we were proud of the ways our community had come together to support each other. We looked forward to 2020 with anticipation, though we couldn’t have predicted the challenges that lay ahead.
