2023 Year in Review: Weathering Storms and Change
Weathering Storms and Change
2023 was a year of significant challenges and changes for Alameda. From natural disasters to institutional changes, our community faced multiple tests of resilience.
Alameda Sun Closes
The long-standing local newspaper, the Alameda Sun, published its final edition in 2023, leaving the Alameda Post as the only local news organization reporting and publishing news in Alameda. This was a significant loss for the community, as local journalism plays a crucial role in keeping residents informed about city affairs, local events, and community issues.
The closure of the Alameda Sun highlighted the challenges facing local journalism and the importance of supporting remaining local news sources.
Severe Flooding and Storms
January 2023 began with massive atmospheric river storms that caused widespread flooding, downed trees, and power outages throughout Alameda. The severity of the storms led the City to proclaim a State of Emergency.
FEMA and the state opened disaster recovery centers to assist residents and businesses with the damage. Alameda Peeps members shared information about resources, safety tips, and ways to help neighbors who were affected by the storms.
The community came together to support each other during this difficult time, demonstrating once again the strength of our community network.
AUSD School Closure Decision
After significant community opposition, the AUSD Board of Education voted to phase out sixth through eighth grades at Bay Farm Middle School starting in August 2023. This decision generated extensive discussion in the Alameda Peeps community, with members sharing information, perspectives, and concerns about the impact on students and families.
The decision highlighted the importance of community engagement in educational policy decisions and the value of platforms like Alameda Peeps for facilitating community dialogue.
Looking Forward
2023 was a challenging year, but it also showed the resilience of the Alameda community. As we looked ahead to 2024, we were ready to face whatever challenges and opportunities lay ahead, knowing that our community would continue to support each other.
